Our client's brief was to convert their uninhabitable loft space into a large bedroom and ensuite, using eco-friendly materials that would have low allergen levels and save on energy costs in the future. These principles also applied to the renovations undertaken in the rest of the property.

After a considerable amount of research we decided that Second Nature's Sheep's Wool Insulation would meet our needs perfectly. The products we used were B.B.A. (British Board of Agrement) approved and met Building Regulations criteria for heat loss as certified by Birmingham City Council Building Control.

As there was adequate head height in the existing attic we did not need to alter the ceiling levels on the 1st floor in order to install the sheep's wool (it is generally thicker than conventional phenolic insulation).

The insulation was fitted to the walls, front roof slope and new dormer roof using Second Nature's Rafter Insulation Hangers. It was a very pleasant product to use, with a subtle 'farmyard' smell until it was boarded over! Although it was more expensive to install than conventional insulation, as it becomes more widely available it should become more competitively priced.

Waxed cork flooring was laid throughout the 2nd floor, providing an insulated, sound proofing, non-slip finish that is recommended for use by those suffering from dust allergies. Moat of the pine timber used for the new staircase, balustrading, skirting, architrave etc was left untreated, creating a natural, European feel to the space.

In other parts of the house we sanded and restored the original Victorian floorboards. These were treated with an organic oil to strengthen and nourish the wood and sealed with a natural wax. This gave the floors a slight sheen which would be further enhanced over time by the gentle polishing action of walking over it in felt slippers!
